Description

Axinite Crystal Pair from Shigar Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Axinite is a rather exotic and beautiful mineral that may occur in a show or at a mineral show and is characterized by its aesthetic crystal habit, a glassy to vitreous luster, and a rich, earth tone color range, which is primarily a honey-brown to violet-brown tint. Being a member of the silicate group it forms systematically intricate complexes of wedge-shaped crystals that are strongly pleochroic, that is, the color in one direction may differ significantly when seen in another direction.

Color and Clarity:
These are two nice pieces of axinite crystals with nice formed structure and naturally colored from deep brown to delicate violets. The crystals do not have any sort of coating; therefore, the brilliance or glow of the bare crystal material helps in giving the showy appearance.

Crystal Structure:
Both pieces of axinite in this pair are well-terminated to show the segregation of subsidiary wedges quite clearly. The specimens’ crisp outlines and fine concentric layers also indicate impressive crystal formation in the natural world.

Origin and Significance
The mineral specimens of Shigar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan are highly sought after for their excellent quality of stones like aquamarine, tourmaline, and axinite. Its climate plays a role in making of these beautiful crystals, therefore, they are rare and in high demand among collectors of gems and stones.
