Sandstone is a type of sedimentary rock that contain predominantlygrains of sand, that is minerals or rock fragments measuring upto 2mm in size. It is the second most prevalent sedimentary rock representing 20–25 % of sedimentary rocks whose formation is predominant. The creation of sandstone is as follows; weathering, erosion, deposition and lastly lithification.
What is Sandstones
Sandstones are member of siliciclastic sedimentary rocks family consisting of sand size clastics; particles with clast diameter ranging from 2. 0mm to 1/16mm that are either cemented together by chemical elements existing in the cracks or lithified into a single mass by pressure exerted on the sand-size framework grain and finer-grained matrix, both primary and secondary in origin. It passes into the coarser-grained siliciclastic conglomerates and breccias described above and also towards siltstones and numerous other finer grained mudstones described below. Not all sedimentary rocks with sand-size matrix which is also referred to as arenite were created through the physical breaking down of previous rocks. While textural sandstone is not a terrigenous siliciclastic rock, limestone varieties containing many sand-size allochems such as oöids and fragments of fossils included into the rock are also considered textural sandstones. The described rock when lithified is called micrite and when unconsolidated, it is called carbonate sands but their correct name is limestones. So excluded from this discourse also are pyroclastic sandstone and tuffs formed by lithifying explosive produced volcanic ash deposits for they are not products of weathering process.
For these reasons sandstones are important: These occurs between 10% and 20% of volume of the Earth’s sedimentary rock record. These they are normally very strong structures that are resistant to erosion and therefore play a major role in shaping the landscape. From these rocks they build chains like the Appalachians of east North America, the Carpathians of east-central Europe the Pennines of northern England and the Apennine Range of Italy if folded; but if unleaded they form great table lands such as the Colorado and Allegheny plateaus. Commodity-wise they are of particular value as vast petrol and water depots, superior house building stone and highly profitable metallic deposits. Above all, they are the most useful kind of sedimentary rocks for inferring past conditions on Earth. The biggest signal of sedimentary origin is the sort of a sedimentary rock source region, its composition and relief and position. Formation of Sandstone
1. Weathering and Erosion
Initial formation begins with the weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks, which breaks them down into finer particles, primarily sand-sized grains.
2. Transportation
The eroded particles are then transported by elements such as water, wind, or ice.
3. Deposition
Following transportation, these particles are deposited and accumulate in layers in various environments like riverbeds, beaches, or deserts.
4. Lithification
Over time, the accumulated layers of sand are buried under additional sediments. The weight of these sediments compresses the sand particles and the process of lithification turns them into solid rock.
Classification of Sandstone
By Texture
– Fine-Grained: Particles are small and may not be visible without magnification.
– Medium-Grained: Particles can be seen with the naked eye.
– Coarse-Grained: Contains larger grains that are easily visible.
By Mineral Composition
– Quartz Arenite: Predominantly composed of quartz.
– Arkose: Rich in feldspar and quartz.
– Greywacke: Characterized by a mix of rock fragments within a fine-grained matrix.
– Lithic Arenite: Contains numerous rock fragments.
By Cementing Material
– Siliceous Sandstone: Bound by silica.
– Calcareous Sandstone: Cemented with calcium carbonate.
– Ferruginous Sandstone: Cemented by iron oxides.
Types of Sandstone
– Quartz Arenite: It is nearly made up of quartz sand grains, usually sorted in good fashion and rounded to various degrees as well.
– Arkose: It consists of many amounts of feldspar particularly pinkish or reddish in nature.
– Greywacke: Has a somewhat ‘unclean’ look to it thanks to the appearance of a fine-grained matrix within the ore component of sand.
– Lithic Arenite: While it contains a lot of rocky particles which may be volcanic or metamorphic in origin.
– Calcareous Sandstone: Has either calcite within it as a cement or the sediment that made up the rock.
– Ferruginous Sandstone: It is also applicative of iron oxide as a cementing agent which-role gives the rock a reddish tinge.
Uses of Sandstone
It is employed in construction as building stone, ornamental and sculptural stone and also for flooring and in the manufacture of tiles and slabs. It is also utilized in glass production and at times in storage of oil and gas.
